Declaración pública en repudio al asesinato de Rodrigo Morales, activista mexicano

Las organizaciones firmantes manifestamos nuestro total repudio por el asesinato de Rodrigo Morales Vázquez cometido el jueves 2 de septiembre en Cuernavaca, capital de Morelos en México. Desde 2008 Rodrigo fue un férreo opositor al funcionamiento del tiradero de Loma de Mejía, a cargo de la firma PASA, responsables de la recolección de basura de Cuernavaca, el que fue reabierto y ahora operado por la empresa Trideza y KS pese a la oposición de la comunidad al no cumplir con la Manifestación de Impacto Ambiental (MIA), ni con los requisitos requeridos por la autoridad.
Este caso tiene un largo historial. En 2008 la comunidad se opuso a la construcción del botadero, cuyas obras sin embargo fueron concluidas un tiempo después, y en 2010 la administración municipal ordenó el cierre por las afectaciones ambientales a la ciudad.
La reciente reapertura del botadero reanudó las protestas, ya que la comunidad expone que el relleno de Loma de Mejía está contaminando los mantos freáticos y el Glacis de Buenavista. Rodrigo fue parte de la resistencia social de manera muy activa durante todo el proceso y en distintas ocasiones levantó la voz para señalar la corrupción y acciones indebidas detrás de este proyecto. Al mismo tiempo, se dedicaba a la fotografía y administraba un centro de acopio de residuos donde logró emplear a varias personas.
Este domingo, pepenadores, amigos y familiares despidieron a Rodrigo. “No vamos a dejar que el centro de acopio desaparezca, mostro”, prometieron.
El asesinato de Rodrigo sacude una vez más a los ambientalistas de toda la región y es una violación a los derechos humanos y un acto de feroz intimidación que no se produce en un contexto aislado. Es urgente en América Latina garantizar los derechos a la participación pública en los procesos de toma de decisiones ambientales y contribuir activamente a la creación de condiciones para la protección del derecho de cada persona, de las generaciones presentes y futuras, a defender su territorio y vivir en un medio ambiente sano.
Este acto bárbaro contra Rodrigo es una prueba más de la urgencia de detener el gigantesco e inescrupuloso negocio detrás de la gestión de los residuos en nuestro continente, orientado a la ganancia al corto plazo, alejado de la visión comunitaria, participativa y de protección de la naturaleza que son parte de las estrategias de basura cero que promovía Rodrigo y por la que trabajan muchos activistas en la región.
Exigimos justicia para Rodrigo y que se esclarezcan los hechos alrededor de su asesinato.
No a la privatización de la basura.

PUBLIC STATEMENT
ORGANIZATIONS CONDEMN THE MURDER OF RODRIGO MORALES, MEXICAN ACTIVIST.

The signatory organizations express their total repudiation of the murder of Rodrigo Morales Vázquez committed on Thursday, September 2 in Cuernavaca, the capital of Morelos in Mexico. Since 2008 Rodrigo was a fierce opponent of the operation of the Loma de Mejía landfill, run by PASA, the company responsible for rubbish collection in Cuernavaca, which was reopened and now operated by the company Trideza and KS despite the community’s opposition, as it did not comply with the Environmental Impact Assessment (MIA), nor with the requirements of the authorities.
This case has a long history. In 2008 the community opposed the construction of the dump, whose works were concluded some time later, and in 2010 the municipal administration ordered the closure due to environmental effects on the city.
The recent reopening of the landfill renewed the protests, as the community exposed that the Loma de Mejía landfill is contaminating groundwater layers and the Glacis de Buenavista.
Rodrigo had an active role during the social resistance throughout the process and on different occasions raised his voice to point out the corruption and improper actions behind this project. At the same time, he enjoyed photography and managed a waste collection center where he employed several people.
Last Sunday, wastepickers, friends and family bid Rodrigo a farewell. “We are not going to let the collection center disappear, brother,” they promised.
Rodrigo’s assassination once again shakes environmentalists across the region and it is a violation of Human Rights and it represents an act of fierce intimidation that does not occur in an isolated context. It is urgent in Latin America to guarantee the rights to public participation in environmental decision-making processes and to actively contribute to the creation of conditions for the protection of the right of each person, of present and future generations, to defend their territory and to live in a healthy environment.
This barbaric act against Rodrigo is further proof of the urgency of stopping the gigantic and unscrupulous business behind waste management in our continent, oriented towards short-term profit, without community participation and the nature protection vision that is part of the zero waste strategies promoted by Rodrigo and for which many activists in the region are working.
We demand justice for Rodrigo and that the facts surrounding his murder be clarified.
