As part of the Global North, the US and Canada are home to some of the most wasteful economies, generating massive amounts of waste and exporting environmental harms to the Global South through pollution, resource extraction, and waste colonialism. Yet within this context, frontline communities and grassroots groups are leading a powerful shift that challenges harmful systems and advances just, local zero waste solutions. From resisting incineration to shaping bold policies, the region is a key battleground in the global fight for environmental justice and the broader zero waste movement.

GAIA’s 2018 Zero Waste Academy took place in Detroit from November 16–18 at the Cass Corridor Commons, hosted by Breathe Free Detroit. The ZWA brought together grassroots organizers, zero waste experts, and community leaders for three days of workshops, trainings, and strategy sessions focused on transitioning away from incineration toward community-led zero waste solutions. Participants also attended a local town hall hosted by Breathe Free Detroit and collaborated on identifying movement priorities.
