The Zero Waste Academy (ZWA) began as an immersive 2-week program developed by GAIA Asia Pacific and Mother Earth Foundation (MEF) Philippines to equip participants—from government officials to civil society leaders—with the tools and knowledge to implement community-based Zero Waste programs in their cities. Since 2017, ZWA has blended theory with practice through a strategic mix of lectures, site visits, simulations, and community engagements, drawing from best practices and case studies across the Asia Pacific. The region is highly relevant to the global Zero Waste agenda due to its rapid urbanization, growing waste crisis, and vulnerability to climate change impacts. While it faces significant challenges such as plastic pollution, limited waste infrastructure, and pressures to adopt false solutions like waste-to-energy incineration, it also presents opportunities for grassroots leadership, policy reform, and community-driven innovation. While the pandemic necessitated virtual iterations from 2020 to 2022, the Academy’s impact has remained strong, with many alumni going on to lead impactful Zero Waste initiatives, including plastic-free campaigns and opposition to incineration. In its current hybrid setup, the ZWA continues to be a vital platform for fostering innovation, leadership, and collaboration in the Zero Waste movement.
