GAIA’s Statement on the Israel-Palestine Conflict

GAIA stands in solidarity with the people of Palestine. We join our members from Egypt, South Africa, the USA, and many other countries in condemning all breaches of human rights and international law including all targeting of civilians. We call for a permanent ceasefire and an end to the illegal siege on Gaza, the unconditional release of all captives (Israeli and Palestinian), and an end to U.S. and other foreign government funding for the Israeli military.

GAIA’s work is rooted in our commitment to climate and social justice, which are inseparable from human rights. In clear violation of these rights and international law, Israel’s ongoing, indiscriminate military attacks on Gaza have killed over 15,000 civilians and its ongoing siege has trapped more than two million people without access to water, food, medical supplies, electricity, or safe harbor. The current crisis is also part of a cycle of violence rooted in a history of occupation, apartheid, and colonization.

We join top UN human rights officials, scholars, and Holocaust survivors in condemning these attacks as genocide. We

grieve and condemn the brutal and unjust killing and hostage-taking of Israeli and other civilians by Hamas’s armed wing and other Gazan armed groups. No crime justifies another.

In our work and our movements, it is vital to call out all forms of racism and prejudice, including islamophobia and antisemitism. At this time it is particularly important to clearly distinguish between Zionism and Judaism, Israelis and their government, and Palestinians and Hamas. Nobody is safe until we are all safe.

Many of GAIA’s members and allies have spoken out and offered ways to get involved. Here are statements from:
