DRAPED IN INJUSTICE: Unravelling the Textile Waste Crisis

GAIA Africa and Greenpeace Africa have joined forces to release a compelling new resource that exposes the hidden impacts of textile waste across the continent. Draped in Injustice breaks down the key facts, impacts, policy issues, and recommendations related to textile waste across the continent. Each year, approximately 83 million tonnes of textile waste are produced globally – 65% of which are made from fossil-fuel derived synthetic fibres -with the equivalent of one garbage truck’s worth of clothing being burnt or sent to a landfill every second. This resource provides a clear, accessible overview of how textile waste affects people and the environment in Africa. It also explores the global systems driving the crisis and outlines practical steps toward lasting, equitable solutions.
