Granadero
Baigorria, a city near Rosario, in Santa Fe province, passed
a law banning incineration of pathological waste!
Santa Fe´s Minister of Health tried to
construct a new incinerator in Eva Peron Hospital, in Granadero
Baigorria, to replace an obsolete one in operation. It was meant
to burn Eva Peron Hospital waste, and also waste from Centenario
Hospital, located in Rosario, where there used to be an incinerator
but had to close due to pressure put last year by the Anti Incineration
Citizens Coalition of Argentina and Medical students.
The threat then was that waste from both hospitals was treated
in the new incinerator, brought by the Minister of Health. But
that didn´t happen, thanks to the work done by members
of the Antiincineration Citizens Coalition, and half dozen communal
organizations, who gave out 10.000 leaflets and organized information
meetings in every neighbour around.
The law was proposed by the Antiincineration Coalition and the
neighbours, and then consented by the council and the executive.
It was unanimously approved.
Thanks to the work done by the Anti Incineration Citizens Coalition
of Argentina, together with neighbours and students, health
care facilities from Granadero Baigorria will no longer burn
their waste, and will now send them to an autoclave in Rosario
for their treatment. The victory is also that there won´t
be a new incinerator in Eva Peron Hospital, and the old one
won´t operate anymore.
This new victory joins other antiincineration laws passed in
Capitán Bermúdez, Coronda, Villa Constitución,
Coronel Bogado, Marcos Juárez, and Buenos Aires city,
and the dozens of incineration projects stopped by the Coalition,
communities and NGOs all around the country.
