GAIA is committed to a complete overhaul of our extractive economy, and to the birth of a circular system where all people can enjoy their right to a safe and healthy environment and where no community bears the burden of our unsustainable patterns. Our goal is clean production and the creation of a closed-loop, materials-efficient economy where all products are composted, reused, repaired, or recycled.

Our vision of a new economy is sustainable not only in the way it conserves materials but also in the way that workers who recover waste are respected and valued, and local communities are engaged and empowered. Around the world, waste management is overwhelmingly organized at the local level, providing a powerful opportunity for local residents, waste workers, and local government to work together effectively and transparently for community good. We believe in economies that are driven from the grassroots up and rooted in community.
