UPDATE! (Dated June 16, 2017)

Thank you all for your advocacy to help stop subsidization for incineration in California!

In the spring, you helped defeat AB 655 by keeping the bill from moving out of committee. AB 655 would have given climate subsidies to the state’s three waste burning incinerators. And just last week we learned of attempts to include incinerator subsidies in the state budget, and after your advocacy the current version does not include these subsidies. Your calls matter!

We know though that the industry is going to be trying everything they can to sneak the subsidies in, and we must stay vigilant! So keep calling, and stay tuned. Thanks for all that you do!

April 2017: California Assembly Bill 655 (AB 655) did not pass the Assembly Natural Resource Committee during its final hearing on April 24, 2017. The bill would have allowed the state’s waste incinerators to qualify as renewable energy, giving these polluting facilities a financial bailout. The state RPS will not work if it includes facilities that create pollution.

A broad section of concerned organizations opposed AB 655, from communities on the front lines of California’s incinerators like East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice, faith organizations, environmental justice organizations, zero waste advocates, environmental organizations, waste management professionals associations, and many more.

Please see the letter from East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice and other organizations representing communities being polluted by California’s three incinerators.
