Since our establishment in South Africa in December 2000, GAIA has steadily grown, attracting more participants worldwide and providing “the link
between the globalizing world trade system in incinerators and the community people that suffer from this trade”(Bobby Peek, groundWork).

Currently, we have over 300 member groups and individuals from more than 60 countries. GAIA Global Meeting 2003 hopes to further strengthen the global coalition against unsustainable production, materials use and waste disposal and for sustainable, healthy and socially just alternatives. The Meeting will serve as a unique platform to:

• Share and celebrate members’ practical experiences on fighting incinerators and other back-end waste disposal practices and their efforts to promote alternatives.

• Discuss and develop strategies to strengthen and advance GAIA’s mission at the local, regional and global levels.

THEME AND AGENDA. GAIA Global Meeting 2003 will address strategic issues and challenges facing the GAIA membership as regards wastes, incinerators and alternatives. The program will feature informational and educational workshops, training opportunities, strategic planning sessions and side meetings, as well as exhibit of arts, crafts and usable items made from discards, cultural events, tree planting and more.
